Holiday Weekend Weather Outlook

Good Morning! I'll start this weather blog with a look back over the past week. Sorry, lots to cover here as we into the holiday weekend.

Past Week
Back on Sunday, we started the week with our hottest high temperature of 2012 of 88° under Sunny Skies. As the afternoon progressed, some clouds began to fill in and some showers/t'storms began to pop up across the state but most stayed dry until the overnight hours. We picked up only 0.10" at Indy Airport early Monday Morning.  A cold front swept through Monday, the rain activity then ended, and a brisk northwest wind cooled our temps to a seasonal mid 70s not only for Monday but for Tuesday as well. But the pattern began to change Wednesday. The winds shifted to a southerly air flow ushering in warmer temperatures. With high pressure continuing to dominate, the sun continues to shine rain free. We hit 79° Wednesday and higher to 85° for Thursday. We'll only continue to climb even higher for the weekend.

Today
A weak cold front passing this morning will have little effect on todays temperature as a warm front will lift it Northbound. We do have a small chance for an isolated shower or storm which won't hit everybody in the state. Some can expect dry weather under a mixture of sunshine and clouds. A strong south wind help gave us a temp boost yesterday pushing high temps in the mid 80s but for today, we'll be pushing for 90s, more likely outside of Indianapolis. Dew points temps to creep past the comfort level of 60°. Expecting Dew Point Temps around 62-65° giving us that muggy feeling on a hot day, a tad bit uncomfortable.
The Record High today is 93° set back in 1965, 47 years ago. I don't think this record will fall but we will get close. I'm going with a high of 89°.

SAT-MON
The weekend will be hot but sunny. It will be uncomfortable and humid. The chance for triple digit heat index values is a dangerous threat for heat related illnesses/inury. Dangerous heat can be harmful and even FATAL. Later below is a short section of being safe in the heat.
We'll challenge record highs all weekend. Saturday & Sunday the Record High is 94°, and 96° Monday all set back consecutively in 1911, 101 yrs ago. I'm going with 92° Saturday, 93° Sunday, and 90° Monday. Sunday looks to be our best chance to tie or break a record high. A cold front looks to come through Monday that will not only offer up our next chance of rain Monday night into Tuesday morning but push all the heat away for the remainder of the week.

High temperatures for the past 10 Memorial Days
2011-90° 2010-86° 2009-74° 2008-76° 2007-88°
2006-89°
2005-76° 2004-73° 2003-70° 2002-80°

Tuesday-Saturday
Whether you hung out with family and cooked on the grill in the back patio, or took in the sights and sound at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, or maybe took a weekend dip in the pool, its time to put the fun aside. Its back to work Tuesday. Another weather pattern is set to take the stage that not only brings us our next rain chances but cooler temperatures as well that looks to last the remainder of the work week. 80s for Tuesdays and mid to upper 70s for Wednesday-Saturday.

What's Ahead
After a few cool, maybe below average days, temps should climb to seasonal values. I think the first 10 days of June our temps will fall into the 70s to start then warm back to 80s.

Health Safety In The Heat
As we approach warmer temperatures and higher humidity this adds to the dangers for hazardous health conditions that can damage your body or lead to fatalities without taking extra precautions of safe, proper care/treatments. Make sure you are hydrating by drinking plenty of water or some sport drinks. Avoid drinking carbonated and/or alcoholic beverages that could lead to heat cramps. As sun does contain some Vitamin D for your for body, avoid prolonged exposure as this could damage your skin. If engaged in outdoor activities leaving you with prolonged exposure to the sun, wear sunglasses and suncreen.
Vitamin D maintains normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus in the human body and can possibly help prevent osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and even depression. The recommended exposure time to sunlight without sunscreen is only 10-15 mins per day, 2-3 times per week between 8AM-4PM. Longer unprotected exposure can lead to skin cancer. Currently, FDA has mandated new labels for sunscreen and manufacturers have until early fall to comply with the new label requirements. The main thing you need to know is Sunscreen is good for atleast 2 hrs and then you must reapply. If your in and out of water it may be good for 40-80 mins. SPF 30 is recommended but 45 is highly recommended especially if your outside for a longer period of time.
Wear loose clothing and get in the shade to cool off faster, if possible.
Also, keep in mind, childrens and pets should not be left in the vehicle in the heat. This is dangerous and could lead to death as well especially during long periods of time and inadequate cool ventillation. About 400 people are killed and 6200 people hospitalized every year in the U.S. due to excessive heat Please follow safe precautions this summer. Don't become a part of this statistic.
