Cooler Than Normal Year so Far

As you may know, we are off to one of the coolest starts to a year in decades. We saw brutally cold temperatures January and February extending partially into March. The average mean temperature from January 1st through April 30th was 32.8°. This is 6.1° from the normal average mean temperature of 38.9°. For reference, the average mean temperature for each of 1st 4 months are 28.1° (January), 32.1° (February), 42.2° (March), and 53° (April). This is the coolest 1st 4 months in 35 years when the average mean temperature for January-April of 1979 was 32.5°. This is 0.3° cooler than this year for the specified time period. Other cool starts was 1980 (34°), 1982 (34.4°), 1996 (35.3°), 2003 (36.2°), and 2004 (39.4°). These years are not necessarily in the Top 5 but rather in the Top 10 list of Coolest 1st 4 months since 1979.

The cold weather isn't the only noteworthy item this year, how about snow? Though the winter season has completed its run, I'd still like to go over a few numbers. Measurable snowfall has been recorded in each month of the year so far, all above normal! You can redirect your attention to the table below. As you can see, since January 1st we have received 46.8". This is NOT a final snow total for the year 2014 as we still have opportunities to add to this number between October-December at the end of the year. However, for the Spring season, we have received 3.4" which is likely the final snow amount. This is tied with 1936 as the 45th snowiest Spring (Not included in Table). Remember last year? It went down as the 4th most snowiest Spring on record with 14.5". So we weren't up higher on the totem pole for that one this year. The average Spring season sees 2.6" so we still did see more than we should have.

The snow year doesn't run from January through December but rather from July of one year ending on June of the following year. Therefore, our current snow year started on July 1st, 2013 and will end on June 30th, 2014. During this time period to date, we have received 55.7". This is ranked as the 3rd snowiest snow year so far.
