Some Rain Tonight With A Drop in Temps As Fall Arrives, But More Summer-Like Warmth Looms

Good Afternoon! After a very long hiatus, I have finally returned to give you all weather updates for Central Indiana. They will be very brief over the next few weeks but I will put more effort into them as winter approaches so you can be weather prepared.

As we take a look at national air temperatures across the United States, we, in Indianapolis, are on our 14th day straight with afternoon highs climbing above the 80° threshold. This astonishing run of warmth will briefly be interrupted over the next few days as we officially open up the fall season (at 3:50 AM Monday Morning) but the summer weather is not done by a long shot. The remarkable warmth will tighten its grip again to finish out the month with average daily temperatures over 15° above normal. This could be the sixth year on record, we see all of September's days stay at or above 50°. Previous years include 2009, 2008, 1933, 1925, and 1910. Additionally, for what could be the 4th year on record, we are threatening with the chance to see all of September's days go above 70°. Only three other years have seen this happen with the last occurrence 21 years ago in 1998. The two other previous years was 1986 and 1884.

The drop in humidity today may limit the rain threat we have overnight into early Monday morning as our dry pattern continues to persist. We have only had one day with measurable precipitation this month so unless we can add to the tally over the next 24 hours, we could very well be in the running to finish as the DRIEST September on record. The years of 2017, 2010, 1999, 1998, 1979, and 1978 make out 6 out of the top 10 driest Septembers on record (with less than 1" of precipitation for the month), over a span of nearly 40 years.

After our surge of warmth to end the month, there are some indications a switch to somewhat of a cooler regime may arrive in October but by the month's standards may be around normal. For reference, we typically see a high temperature in the 60s and a low temperature in the 40s throughout the month. More details in the days ahead.
