Dry & Hot Week Ahead

Good Morning! Not much relief from drought conditions this weekend around the state. Some spots got lucky particularly hitting areas under a moderate drought. Attica picked up over 5 inches, South Bend added 0.2" to their months totals while the Circle City didn't record a single drop. Indianapolis is currently challenging two records. The first is for driest June, that record is for 0.36". The second is for the driest month in Indiana History (1870-present), this is for 0.07". Currently we stand at 0.05". Yesterday marked the 13th consecutive day without measureable rainfall. The longest stretch on record is 39 days which started on August 14 and ended on September 22 back in 1908, nearly 104 years ago.
Every Thursday, the CPC releases drought monitor maps and it looks like more locations might be added to the moderate drought area. Currently, nearly 90% of the state is abnormally dry and 40% is under a moderate or severe drought. Again, the rainfall this weekend primarily fell to the areas under a moderate drought in the map below. I'll post the new map at the end of the week when its released.

With drought conditions continuing to persist in Indiana, its having a negative impact on 4th of July activity planning. Burn bans are in place for 20 counties in Indiana highlighted in Red on the map below. When burn bans are issued that means fireworks, burning leaves/trash, campfires, bonfires, and unpermitted controlled burns are prohibited. It also prohibits residents from discarding cigarettes on the ground or in a receptacle that isn't fireproof. Many have already seen a number of brush fires around the state. Although your county may not fall under a burn ban yet, its a good idea to follow safe practices and limit yourself to the activities above. Even the smallest spark may create a fire that can get out of control. Be care with your summer grilling as well.

Besides the lack of rain, the temperatures will be the center of attention this week. We are looking at our hottest temperatures this week, making this the hottest week of the year. After a cool start to the month averaging around 10° below normal, we began to warm things back up 80s and 90s over the past week. Notice we hit 93° for Saturday, this so far is our hottest day of 2012 so far.

We are also looking at a breezy day for your Monday and Tuesday with Gusts up to 30 MPH. Dew Point temps will decrease this evening this will dry out the atmosphere so it won't be as uncomfortable as it may have been the past few nights. This will however be one hot sunny week with temps in the mid 90s. Two cold fronts will pass at the end of the week and weekend. Cold fronts #1 moves in on Thursday Evening offering up our next chance for a few rain drops but at this time it looks like a pretty dry run. This will only drop our temps a few degrees for Friday. Cold Front #2 will pass though Saturday Evening which could brings another chance for rain on Sunday,as well. It looks like the start of the work week next week will be a little cooler. Looking at temps in the low 80s for Monday but doesn't appear to last long at all.
