Spring Gets A Visit From Old Man Winter

Spring gets a visit from old man winter but how long will winter stay? More info in this edition. I also briefly recap the month. My 10 Day outlook is updated and located at the end of the blog.

APRIL 2014 TEMPS
Temperatures have trended warmer this month the deeper we are getting into the Spring season. In fact, we have not gone 32° or below so far for the month through the 14th. 6 out of 14 days this month have been above normal while 7 days have been below normal. We have seen 1 day normal. The lowest high temperature we've seen this month is 49° on April 7th. As for low temperatures and overall daily average temperature, the 5th is the coldest of the month when we got as low as 34°. We saw 4 days this month of 70+ temps on the 10th (74th), 12th (78°), 13th (75°), and 14th (71°). These are some of the warmest temperatures the city of Indianapolis hasn't seen in 6 months (early October). The average temperature this month is 52.2°, which is 1.8° above normal. If the month finishes above normal, it will be the 1st time in 7 months for a month to finish with above normal temps. The last time a month finished above normal was last year in September. No temperature records have been tied or broken this month.
So far this month we've seen 4 days with highs in the 70s, 4 days in the 60s, 5 days in the 50s, and 1 day in the 40s. Avg high is 62.7°.
So far this month we've seen 5 days with lows in the 30s, 6 days in the 40s, 1 day in the 60s. The average low is 41.6°.

APRIL 2014 PRECIP
The 1st week of the month was wet with measurable precipitation being recorded on the 1st 4 days of the month totaling 2.50". Additional rainfall was recorded on the 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, & 14th bringing the months total to 4.07. The total precipitation of 3.33" from the 1st-7th marked one of the wettest opens to an April in 57 years. In 1957, we received 4.23" of rain in the 1st 7 days of the month. Overall, the total precipitation (4.07") received so far this month is 2.35" above normal to date (NORMAL IS 1.72") and 0.26" above the average for the entire month (3.81"). No precipitation records have been tied or broken this month.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE WEEK
If you didn't get a chance to enjoy the nice warm weather over the weekend, you'll have to wait a little bit for some of this warm weather to come back around. A frontal passage is responsible for driving in cooler weather into the state. The (high) temperature we saw in the 70s over the weekend and in the midnight hours early Monday morning fell back into the 50s early Monday afternoon & 40s & 30s Monday evening. Many areas around the state started Tuesday with temperatures in the upper 20s, lower 30s at values more typical for mornings lows during the late winter season. As of 10AM Tuesday morning, the official low was 28° which was the coldest low temperature since 24° was recorded on March 30th. We are not going to see any record lows but we'll be close to the record for lowest afternoon high for this Tuesday which is 40° set back in 1928. Its possible we may go over this a few degrees but we are under a northwest wind so its hard to say with 100% certainty if this record will stand or be tied or even broken. We also saw some snow Monday Night and Tuesday morning. The official weather recording site for Indianapolis is located out at the airport. NWS officially recorded 0.3" of snow. This brings the snow total for the year to 55.7" which still keeps us ranked as the 3rd most snowiest year on record. The #1 snowiest year was 1981-82 with 58.2" & #2 snowiest year was 1977-78 with 57.9".
Your forecast for the rest of the week will be dry for a few days and temperatures will gradually climb from 40s Tuesday to 50s Wednesday, and then 60s to end the week. Rain makes a return Friday. Most of the coming weekend should be dry.

ARE WE DONE WITH THE FREEZING TEMPS & HOW MANY FREEZE DAYS DID WE SEE?
I certainly hope the cold weather we once knew will take a long overdue extended vacation. You know I've counted up all the days we saw temperatures 32° & below since October 1st and its rather numerous. The 1st time we saw a low temperature of 32° or below was on October 22nd. Since then, the temperatures went 32° or below 118 times. Out of 176 days, 67% of these days saw freezing temps. I broke down the low temps in the table to the right by frequency of 30s, 20s, 10s, single digits, & sub zero lows from October to April (to-date).
NOTE: The main purpose of this table was to show number of days freezing and below. Frequency of 30s only accounts for days that saw low temperatures of 30°-32°. Not all lows for each month is included in the table, where low temps were 33° and above. Data collected and used in this table covers observation data from October 1st-April 15th.

The average date for our last Spring Freeze is approaching. Over the past 16 years, we saw 12 happen in April, 2 in May & 2 in March. Here's a look back at the dates over the past 5 years.

We have a chance of going below freezing again tonight but looking ahead, this might just be it for the season. Only time will tell. More warmth is expected to return later in the month. Is 80s possible? Will need to watch April 24th/25th. Last night's European model run flirts with the idea.
