Frigid Now But Briefly Warmer Tomorrow

Despite a few flurries or a very light dusting of snow showers at times, the weather has been somewhat quiet at times throughout the week. It's hard to get acclimated to colder weather though when we have been stuck in warmer temperatures for a quite awhile now. Temperatures yesterday were in the teens all day. The last time we saw a high below the 20° threshold was on February 16, 2021. Wind chills also dipped below zero. The core of this polar blast of air isn't over quite yet but it will start to ease up soon as we enter the weekend.

TODAY/TONIGHT/SATURDAY/SUNDAY
Skies will gradually brighten up today allowing sunshine to peak through but unfortunately it will not work it's magic on temperatures as we may barely crack the 20° mark this afternoon for a second day in a row. Wind chills will gradually get better rising into the single digits after bottoming out near -10° this morning. Sunset this evening occurs at 5:38 PM. As skies remain mostly clear overnight, this will allow another bitter start Saturday morning. Temperatures will drop into the lower teens with single digit wind chills but as warmer air finally returns, we'll see a big boost in temperaures for the the afternoon. We'll go from thermometer readings that were were well below normal the past few days to an afternoon high that is slightly above normal. This push of air bringing near 40° warmth is ahead of an approaching cold front. While the morning hours may be on the bright side, clouds will gradually fill the sky and thicken up in the afternoon and evening.
The increased moisture in the atmosphere will allow the chance for precipitation to return after sunset Saturday. Since we'll be on the warm side, rain will be the primary concern to start with when it arrives from the West. As the cold front passes, temperatures will begin to drop Sunday afternoon and evening. Mixing is likely to begin after sunrise Sunday with a greater chance for snow showers between 8:00 AM -12:00 PM. Colder and drier air will continue to advance Sunday afternoon and evening. The precipiation thhreat will gradually come to an end and temperatures will drop below freezing in the afternoon. Any snow that falls on Sunday will not pose an immediate threat as accumulation is less likely to occur. However, due to falling temperatures, wet pavement may begin to ice over impacting travel in some spots. Use caution if on the roads Sunday evening.

NEXT WEEK
Another push of arctic air will drop temperatures at values below normal for Monday and Tuesday. Though it will be bitterly cold again, the weather will be calm with some sunshine possibly mixing in at times. Some lake effect snow flurries will be possible on Monday. The remainder of the week may be dry, though a few passing clouds could be possible mid to late week. Long term, confidence in forecast is not the greatest but for now, I did stick in a chance for a wintry mix next weekend. Though temperatures may slightly increase, expect values to continually be near or below normal.
