Brief Relief but Heat Will Return

Good Friday Evening Hoosiers! Most of you may have turned off your air conditioners and opened up the windows in your car or at home. What a refreshing relief! High temps barely reached the 80s in most spots around the state. This is more typical weather for early to mid September. This is the coolest day since the late June and if you didn't get an opportunity to enjoy it then your out of luck for awhile because triple digit temps are looming in the 5 day forecast.
A 4PM snapshot (to the left) shows Northern Indiana clear from the clouds. A 7PM snapshot (to the right) now includes much of the Ohio Valley. Much of the state was able to record 80° temperature readings under some late day sunshine. Clear Skies tonight will allow overnight temps to dip to upper 50s away from the city. Central Indiana can expect low to mid 60s. This will be the most comfortable night of July so far.

Taking a look back at the week. The state received some much needed rainfall which put somewhat of hold to the rainfall deficit but conditions are still pretty bad. We need more rain and we may get that mid to late next week. I'll go more into details in a few days. Here's the observations chart for this week.

We set 3 records and tied 1 this week.
1) July 16-Record High Temperature of 98° tied with 1988 record.
2) July 17--Record High Temperature Set at 101°. Previous Record-100° (1887).
3) July 17-Longest Stretch of Dry Weather set at 47 days. Only 0.09" recorded from June 1-July 17. Previous Record was 0.09" from August 13-September 26, 1908.
4) July 20-Current Streak of now 23 consecutive days with lows 70° or higher (we need to get to midnight to make this official, otherwise it will be 22 days). The previous record was 20 consecutive days set from June 26- July 15, 1921.

Tonight
Clouds will contine to clear, dew point temps will fall and the air will dry out. A refreshing and comfortable night ahead. Overnight lows will be at its lowest for the month tonight going below 70. This will end the streak of low temperatures 70° and above. Expect temps in the low 60s to middle 60s, with some bottoming out in the upper 50s. As a cold front continues to push South, some sorms will set up far South as illustrated in this graphic below courtesy of Accuweather.

Tomorrow
The skies will be clear and the sun will shine but temperatures will be much warmer than Friday. We are looking at highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. This will be a dry heat and we will NOT have the uncomfortable humidity on us. This will make for a beautiful Saturday.

Sunday
The heat and humidity will be on the rise. It will be sunny, dry, and hot with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.

Next Week
We'll start the weekend off dry, sunny, hot, & muggy for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and possible Wednesday pushing triple digit heat. Mid week rain chances will increase and some storms could pop up starting Wednesday with chances lingering into Thursday and Friday. Temps could likely fall to low to mid 90s dependent on rain. If this system is a fluke then we'll push 100 for Wednesday and maybe even Thursday too. Looking at another very short cool down for next weekend with temps in the low 90s to possibly upper 80s.

In my next blog, I'll discuss the drought conditions, update the rainfall deficit chart, and discuss what the next week has in store as the dog days of summer continues on.
