Nearly 70% of the month sees below normal temps
Thursday marked the 12th day of the month to see below normal temperatures. Something that has been very common this year. Going back to January 1st, we've seen 154 days below normal this year, which accounts for 59% of the year. The month to date temperature is 65.9°. This September is cooler than last year (69.5°) but warmer than 2012 (65.2°). We saw our coolest first half of September though in 21 years. This month we've seen 6 (consecutive) days with highs below 70 and the morning temperature has dropped below 50, five times. The lowest morning temperature was 45° on Wednesday, making it the coolest morning since May 19th when we saw the same morning low. The year to date temperature of 53° is 3.6° below the normal average year to date temperature of 56.6°.
Our warmest temperature of the month did, however, occur at the beginning of the month including our 3rd 90° temperature reading of the year on the 5th. Here's a look at the temperature and precipitation observations so far this month through the 18th.
Warm Up Arrives but Weekend Storms Looms
High Pressure continues to shift East but with warmer air west heading our way associated with a warm front, we'll see the thermometer rise over the next few days. We saw our high temperature on Thursday increase to the 70s making for one of the warmest afternoons in 8 days. As we head into the last weekend of the summer season we will get back to more summer-like weather. Temperatures will go from low 70s Thursday to mid 70s Friday, and perhaps cracking the 80° mark on Saturday. If we reach 80 then it will be the 75th time this year temperatures have been 80+. The warmth this year has not been very present this year as you all have felt. We've seen the least amount of 80+ temps in 21 years (72 in 1992) and is the 3rd lowest count over the past 70 years.
We are eyeing our next storm chance late Saturday night into early Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has placed Northern parts of the state under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms. Precipitation numbers from the latest modeling data are pretty sparse though not only for this event but over the next 2 weeks as well. Don't count on mother nature to water your lawn. You'll have to get out and do it yourself especially those in Central and Southern Indiana. I suppose you can call this punishment for all these nice days we are receiving. Good excuse to get out and enjoy the nice sunny weather.
I expect a cloudy start to Sunday with some light drizzle or spotty showers in the morning. Models are a little quick, perhaps too quick, on clearing the clouds out. I'm a little skeptical but we'll have to how quickly the cold front slides through. Despite, the cold front, we are still expecting temperature into the 70s for Sunday afternoon. Cooler Air from the North will be moving in and with winds steering in from the North on Monday, I think we end up a degree or two or three cooler than what models are showing. More dry and sunny weather can be expected next week as high pressure pretty much stalls over our region. Temperatures will primarily be in the 70s for pretty much the entire week. Highs in the mid 70s and lows in the low 50s are considered "normal" for next week so all in all, it should be fairly seasonal.
Summer Nears it End, Fall Air Will Frequently Invade
The autumnal equinox occurs on Monday a few hours after sunset and a little more than a hour before midnight. As the angle of the sun continues to get lower, the length of night time expands while daylight steadily shortens. The loss of daylight hours and lower angle of the sun means it takes longer for temperatures to warm up, therefore, the average temperature continues to decline. We've already seen some our coolest temperature since Spring and we'll only continue to see even cooler weather in the weeks and months to come. Here's a list of a few "Chilly" facts.
