Summer came and now its slipping away! The heat has migrated towards the west coast where record highs have been set in Los Angeles and San Diego on Monday afternoon. The nation's hotspot was 107 in Death valley on both Sunday and Monday. Areas in and around California will continue to look for more record challenging warmth today extending through much of the week. Here in Indianapolis, we reached 79 on Monday. It marked the warmest day of October shared with the 8th.
A frontal passage (FROPA) yesterday brought a few beneficial showers to those south of the city but not everyone got lucky. The air was pretty dry so there wasn't a lot lot of moisture to work with. Those areas that are abnormally dry are the areas that received much of the rain on Monday. Nearly 26% of the state is abnormally dry. In Indianapolis, we have seen the 25th Driest August (1.55"), 36th Driest September (1.70"), and currently tied for the 2nd Driest October with 0.19".
Rain wasn't the only thing that the cold front brought, it also ushered in cooler air which will be felt today. Expect plenty of sunshine with a few high level clouds with temperatures going from the lower 50s in the morning to afternoon highs in the middle 60s. It will also be breezy too with gusts up to 25 mph under a northwest wind. This was the 1st of a series of cold fronts over the next several days. Lows this week will mostly be in the 40s and highs will mostly be in the 60s.
A front will pass late Thursday into Friday offering up our next chance of rain. This will continue to pull down more Canadian air. We are looking at our seasons 1st Fall Frost/Freeze in Indiana over the weekend where much of the state will be in the 30s for weekend low temperatures. In case your wondering, a low temperature around 45 and a high temperature around 66 is considered normal for this time of the year.
We are in for a roller coaster ride. Watching a front around the 20th-22nd that will finally offer up some (much needed) decent rain. Weather indicators favor a cool flow of air as well, I may need to fine tune the temps in the days ahead. Here is a look at my weather forecast for the next 10 days...
