Chilly Night Tonight

Good Evening! I hope you wasn't expecting the Record Heat to Last! If so, I really don't know what to tell you. Your just going to have to snap back into reality and stop day dreaming. The extreme southern portions of the nation could be expecting record heat but not the case for the Central, Eastern, and Western part of the nation. Even up North is getting a little taste of some chilly weather right now, who was also setting records with 70° and 80° warmth last week. Over 6,000 records set this month, the most, 710 records set on Tuesday, March 20th. Here's a LINK to MSNBC article on the records broken in the U.S. Once again, I provided a link to a list of records set here in Indianapolis this year. Click here to view them. Hate to tell you this but the winter gear will be needed tonight. And continue to keep them in handy as well you'll need them later. More info below.

Today/Tonight

Well yesterday, Winds shifted to the North. Throw in the cold front that passed this morning and Low-to-Mild Level Clouds and you get a cool day with temps failing to hit 60s. Current temps around Indiana in mid-to-upper 50s, which is actually seasonal this early spring. Temperatures will fall tonight into the 30s. Also, Dew Point Temps are fallings. The lower the dew point, the drier the air. A freeze warning is issued for Counties North and East of Marion County. If you reside in Marion County, West and South, then you are under a Frost Advisory from 1AM-10AM. Now light winds could be a key factor into whether frost forms or not but either way be prepared. Also, its a good idea to cover plants!

Indiana Weatherman Guru Paul Poteet put a list of Freeze Dates in one of his most recent blogs for Indiana. It shows the Average Last Freeze Dates, Records for Earliest Last Freeze, and Records for Latest Last Freeze. Click HERE to view them. A freeze is considered when temps fall between 28°-32°. For Indianapolis, the avg last freeze is April 17th. The Record for Earliest Last Freeze could be in Jeopardy if we do not get another day 32° or below. Our last freeze day was March 10th, this is unofficial at the moment. The actual record for this event was held on March 24, 1998. The Latest Last Freeze was held 51 years ago on May 27, 1961. In the photo I made below, I list the dates for our Last Spring Freeze for the past 5 yrs. Note, that all have occured in April. Its normal for April to hit 32° or below. And with how things are looking at the moment, this could hold out to be true this year.

Tomorrow
After a chilly start to the morning, winds will shift to a southerly flow, allowing temps to rebound into the upper 60s, low 70s. So the coats will only be needed in the morning. We will have a mixture of sunshine and clouds, but I think it will turn out to be a great Tuesday Afternoon.

Weds-Friday
A low pressure system to the North of Indiana will sweep West to East. We'll pull some rain into Indiana from this system. It will not last long. Most of the shower activity will occur during the morning hours on Wednesday. Can't rule out a rumble of thunder but absolutely nothing will be severe here. Winds also shift back to the North cooling us off back to upper 50s and low 60s. We'll be under the sea-saw affair for the week. Fridays temps warm back up into the 70s again. We should stay dry for Thursday and Friday.

Upcoming Weekend
A disturbance in the atmosphere will bring back the threat of showers and thunderstorms for the weekend. Late Saturday Afternoon into Early Sunday Morning looks to be our best chance. We could see some thunderstorm activity, not sure at the moment if any of this would be severe. I'll keep you informed. Temps will be warm in the 70s for the weekend.

What's Ahead
It appears we have a shot at even cooler air to the start the month of April, could this mean snow flurries as well? Can't really say at the moment. I expect the month of April to go from above average to below average temps in the first half of month. However, the month will probably finsh will a avg temp that is normal for the month. I think the second half of the month we'll have normal April Temps with highs in the mid to upper 60s, and lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. For now, I'm putting a chance of a hard freeze between the 8th-12th day of April. Have to wait, to see how this plays out though.
