Good Afternoon! Taking a few minutes out of my vacation to compose your weekend forecast. First lets take a look back at the week. It was cold one. Some areas to the North squeezed out a few snow flurries but frost was the dominate feature this week. Everyone seeing one of their coldest mornings since the beginning of March. For us in Indianapolis it was the coldest since March 10 when morning lows dipped to 27. Here's a chart that shows our morning lows and afternoon highs observed this week starting from sunday.
A pattern change is under way. The high pressure that dominated much of the week is pushing east. Also, a warm front is moving through. Keeping an eye to the west. Two things in store this weekend. One, warmer temperatures and two, stormy weather. This will not be as intense here as it will be in the plains. When the SPC issues a high risk for severe weather 2 days in advance then this shows how much damage this storm will do. In fact, there could be a tornado outbreak that could effect a few states such as Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas. (See Image below courtesy of Accuweather.com) The last Day 2 High Risk was issued APRIL 7, 2006 (NOAA Photo #3 below, courtesy of Accuweather.com, shows the reports from this day). Take heed of the warnings and remember, get a weather radio. Also, there WILL always be atleast a 1% chance for a tornado to form during a thunderstorm. As lightning can strike anywhere at any given time, its best not to be outside. One lightning strike has enough energy to power a 100 watt light bulb for 3 months.
We have the chance for some storm activity here for the weekend primarily for your Saturday. Rainfall should total well under half an inch. We should have a break Sunday, i wouldn't completely rule out a few sprinkles though. The next rainmaker moves in Sunday Night into Monday. Some storms could become severe with this system. I'm callin for a daily chance for showers til the end of day Monday. As i mentioned in a earlier blog, April is typically the wettest month of the year and one of the top 5 cloudiest months of the year. As the weather pattern changes to a wetter setup, we could easily beef up our precipitation totals finishing above normal for the month.
Temperatures rise to 70s for the weekend and mostly 60s for next week. Keep in mind where the threat for severe weather arises, cooler air exist. I mentioned several times last month you can expect April to be cooler than March. We should finish around normal for the month. The average departure temperature is 53. Currently, our average temperature for the month is 54.
