A New Pattern for the New Year

December saw record warmth which was a delight for many but Mother Nature is on a winter warpath now. After a failed attempt for a White Christmas this season, many are finally scraping and brushing snow and ice of their car windshields this morning as the holiday weekend continues. This morning, 49% of the nation is covered in snow.

Most of the precipitation has ended in Indianapolis though a few clouds remain. Colder air now drapes across the state and temperatures are sitting in the 20s as we approach the noon hour. You can see the extent of the chill across the nation in the image below. The threat for lake effect snow flurries/showers will further diminish deeper into the afternoon and evening. Northerly winds will continue to blow in but be on the breezy side today gusting to 25 mph at times but become more calmer overnight tonight. Wind chills will be in the teens to finish out the day.

Though the pattern will dry for a few days and sunshine will finally return, we are already eyeing the potential for more snow later this week. The increased snow pack will only lead to even more colder temperatues in the days and weeks ahead. Every winter season on record has dropped to 11° or lower in Indianapolis and it doesn't appear this season will be any different. More details will become available at a later time. Stay tuned for further updates on the constant changes ongoing to our weather pattern.
