Quick New Year's Day 2022 Morning Weather Update

Happy New Year!

After turning the page from a very wet 2021, we are kicking off 2022 with more showers. Anything higher than 0.2", which seems likely, will automatically put us in in one of the Top 20 wettest New Year's Day on record. If you can remember, last year we had the 6th wettest New Year's Day on record with 0.77" received. The daily record of 3.81", however, does not look attainable today. Widespread rainfall will continue throughout the day along a frontal boundary until cold air advection arrives and allow precipitation to mix. This transition will happen quickly so there is no significant impacts expected with the mixing of frozen precipitation. However, the last remaining moisture will still allow a few snowflakes to fall on Sunday morning. The reinforcing cold air will finally dry out the atmosphere and clouds will finally begin to dissipate as high pressure slides in to both end the holiday weekend and start off the new work week. Expect an ample amount of sunshine for early next week.

The high temperature of 61° has already been reached and temps will slowly tumble today. This temperature is good for the 5th warmest New Year's Day on record and warmest in 37 years (62° in 1985). We have already slid into the 50s before sunrise this morning (which occurs at 8:06 AM) and we'll be in the 40s for the afternoon and evening. Temps fall in the 30s in the midnight hours and we'll bottom out with a Sunday morning low in the 20s. Depending on how quickly clouds clear, any sunshine on Sunday could possibly aid in bringing the temperature up a few degrees but due to the deepening polar air mass don't expect temps to recover much, if at all. As daylight is lost with sunset Sunday evening, temps will further slip into the teens on Monday morning with winds chills in the single digits.
