Unseasonably Cool July Challenges Records

JULY 2014 BECOMES THE #1 COOLEST ON RECORD
A persistent trough for much of the month in the Ohio Valley Region is responsible for bringing temperatures nearly 15° cooler than normal at times to the city. 26 out of 31 days for the month saw below normal temperatures. The average temperature of 70.1° was 5.4° below normal. This became the coolest July on record ahead of (now ranked #2) 1947 when the average temperature was 70.6°. The average maximum temperature was 79.3°. This was 0.3° shy from the 2009 record for the lowest average maximum temperatures of 79°. 2009 was the only time on record a July saw an average high for the month less than 80° prior to 2014. In fact, prior to 2009 the record was 81° set back in 1909. So, this year marks only the 2nd time for us to see an average high below 80 in July. The month's average low temperature finished at 60.9°. Its the 3rd lowest average low for a July on record. The coldest was 59.7° in 1947. This marks the 7th time on record a July sees a average low below 62° and only the 2nd time for the average low temperature to be below 61°.
Its pretty rare for July to end cooler than June but it happened this year. This unusual weather occurrence is only the 10th time since 1871 for this happen. The average temperature in July of 70.1° is 2.6° cooler than Junes average temperature of 72.7°. Normally, the average temperature in July should be 3.4° warmer than June. The last year July was cooler than June was in 2009 and previous to that was in 1984.

A series of cold front came through in the middle of the month but it wasn't enough to break any temperature records for lowest highs or lowest lows. The month ends cool again as a Canadian air pours back into the state. Temperatures once again flirting with record cool temperatures but ended up just a shy warm. Here's a look at the some of the records this month that barely got by from being tied or broken.
